SPECIAL EDUCATION

The Cameron County School District is committed to helping every child learn, grow, and succeed. Special education services, in accordance with state and federal law, are freely and appropriately provided to those students with special needs in order for them to reach their full potential. These services are designed to meet each student’s unique strengths and needs, while promoting their academic, social, emotional and developmental achievement. Supports may include specialized instruction, related services, accommodations, or modifications to help students be successful in the classroom and beyond.

Families are essential partners in the special education process. We are committed to working collaboratively with parents and guardians to ensure transparency, decision making, and positive outcomes for students. If you have any questions about services, or have concerns about your students learning or development, we encourage you to reach out.

Special Education Process

With parental consent, a comprehensive evaluation occurs to determine in a students meets eligibility for special education services. Once this evaluation is completed, a team meeting is held to discuss results. If a student is found eligible for special education services, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is developed to outline the supports, services, and goals designed to meet the student’s needs. If a student is not found eligible, the team will discuss other supports and interventions available to help the student succeed.

Families are encouraged to ask questions and share their insight throughout the process. The district is committed to working closely and collaboratively with families to ensure students receive the support they need to thrive. These services are provided at no cost to the parent(s).

Every Student Succeeds

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is a federal law that ensures all students receive high-quality instruction. This Act replaces “No Child Left Behind.” This Act works alongside IDEA to ensure students receive the support they need to be successful in school. ESSA protects disadvantaged and high needs students by supporting interventions and ensuring that all teachers and families receive the information they need to ensure student progress and success.

The law requires students assessed using the Pennsylvania Alternative System of Assessment, or PASA, to not exceed one percent of the total number of students assessed by other measures.
